Creating Communities Worth Calling Home
In June 2006, responding to the changes on the horizon, a group of community leaders and social justice advocates formed the
Steps Coalition. Their purpose was to identify ways to enhance and amplify their work towards equitable recovery in this new
post-Katrina landscape.

Today, the Steps Coalition agrees that creating livable communities hinges on a commitment to five essential values: affordable housing,
economic justice, environmental justice, preservation of historical communities and human rights.

Solutions lie, not within these five isolated values, but in the places where they intersect. For example, no housing is affordable if it is
built at the expense of our protective wetlands and economic development that destroys historic neighborhoods robs us of our rich diversity.

Identifying solutions that address the big picture and advocating for their adoption are the goals of our Coalition. Working together towards these goals is how we enhance our members individual and collective work.
