Profile

In the fall of 1994, several religous leaders came together to talk about the people of faith organizing to work for significant changes in the city of Jackson. Getting under the issues to deal with systematic causes that plague our city was their cheif concern. They also were aware that significant transformation can only happen when people of great diversity come together to work for change. Training people to solve problems in their own communities by renewing their interest in public life has a result.

By organizing people and money, we are building an organization that is broad-based and people centered. We cross lines of race, religion and class to train leaders from our own community. These home-grown leaders create social and political change by fighting for the needs of our families, neighborhoods, and congregations.

We follow the framework of the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF). The IAF is a national network of professional community organizers committed to training leaders in the art of democracy. These democratic leadership skills empower people to strenghten their own organizations and to fight for a better community. We believe in following the IAF’s Iron Rule: “Never do for others what they can do for themselves, never.”
