On February 12, 1909, a multiracial group of activist founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In 1911, the organization was incorporated.
The first Mississippi branch of the NAACP was chartered in 1918 in Vicksburg, MS and later re-chartered on April 8, 1940. To carry out the mission of the NAACP statewide, in 1945, members of branches from across the state came together to charter the Mississippi State Conference of Branches. We have been on the forefront of all the major civil rights battles in Mississippi and across the South.
Standing on the shoulders of such notable leaders as: CC Bryant, Medgar Evers, Aaron Henry, Fannie Lou Hammer, Winston Hudson, and Dr. Gilbert Mason, Derrick Johnson our current state president, continues to fight for equal rights under the law for ALL citizens of the state of Mississippi.
Today, the MS NAACP is proud to have retired Supreme Court Justice Fred Banks as one of the longest serving member of the National NAACP Board of Directors. The MS NAACP consists of 112 units, a revolving membership of 11,000 and at least 1 member in 74 of 82 counties in Mississippi.
