The Biloxi Branch NAACP was founded in April 1960 with Dr. Gilbert R. Mason Sr. as its first President. Its greatest achievement was the intergration of the public beaches on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. That day is remembered around Biloxi as "Bloody Sunday". Dr. Mason along with several members of the Biloxi youth branch integrated the beaches of Harrison County MS and were arrested by the Biloxi Police Dept. The Biloxi Branch NAACP was also one of the first branches to file a lawsuit to intergrate the public schools in Mississippi.
