Founded in 1995, NAVASA is a national membership agency comprised of 39 Mutual Assistance Associations and community organizations. Since 2005, NAVASA has been helping local organizations in Houston, New Orleans East and East Biloxi rebuild their communities through long-term development strategies. NAVASA has helped these organizations build organizational infrastructure, develop staff capacity and employ projects including:
• Environmental justice campaign to halt and remediate landfills in New Orleans East as well as reform local and state policies to adopt comprehensive solutions that integrate community participation among disenfranchised communities of color, economic development and public heath and safety.
• Affordable senior housing projects in Houston and New Orleans East
• Raising local and national awareness of public planning processes including Living Cities (Biloxi) and the Unified New Orleans Plan.
• Organizing local merchants to become business associations, access broader financial resources, and develop marketing strategies in East Biloxi and New Orleans East.
