Unity Homes is a fusion of strong partnerships with community groups, affordable housing organizations, leading legal advocates and national law firms, and some of the country’s best green architects, engineers, and manufacturers. With their expertise, we have developed an innovative strategy and organizational framework. Our primary operations -– Home Construction; Healthy Homeownership Partnerships; and, Materials, Technology & Design—are mutually dependent and reinforcing.
Our project starts in coastal Mississippi. It is a strategic investment in communities where the twin crises of endemic poverty and natural disaster struck hard. These neighborhoods have long been visited by disastrous economic conditions, which were only amplified when Hurricane Katrina surged through the area. We will provide factory built homes for the affordable housing market that cost the same or less than conventional models, but which are energy efficient and use healthier building materials.
Unity Homes is proving that healthy and inexpensive housing are not mutually exclusive. Economic and environmental principles are equally essential, and this is reflected in our structure. Until private suppliers meet these needs, Unity Homes will drive the change home with a vertically-integrated operation.
By infusing the housing industry with this new approach, we are counteracting negative feedback loops that plague low-income housing. Unhealthy housing conditions, combined with unjust terms of financing, entrench cycles of sickness and poverty for many families and communities. Our approach guarantees a far better future through fair financing practices that build homeowner equity, and housing improvements that build family and community health.
