Dear GRN Supporter,
I love Thanksgiving. This season, I’m especially thankful for cypress forests in Louisiana. I’m thankful that Louisiana black bears still have places to live. I’m thankful that the trees continue to bolster my beloved city’s hurricane defenses and flood protection. I’m thankful for clean water and adventures in a canoe. I’m thankful for GRN member groups, Atchafalaya Basinkeeper and Southwings, who constantly conduct monitoring flights in Louisiana.
Most of all, I’m thankful for you, for every single phone call, email, letter, and action that you have taken to enable me to pass along on this field report :
“In response to announcements made by Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, and Home Depot and to the fact that we are stopping illegal logging, our monitoring flights have shown cypress logging activities gradually come to a halt in coastal Louisiana.” - Dean Wilson, Atchafalaya Basinkeeper.
Woohoo! Our combined efforts have already saved countless trees. Protecting cypress forests in Louisiana is a great first step, but there is still a hike in front of us. As we celebrate the intact forests of Louisiana, cypress logging continues to occur in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and undoubtedly other places we don’t know about. And a long-term commitment to Louisiana’s forests is still lacking.
On December 4th, once thanks have been given and the food has been digested, help tell Home Depot, Lowe’s and Wal-Mart to stop selling unsustainable cypress mulch no matter where it is logged.
