New Orleans—A diverse group of community organizations (see below) will mark the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on August 28-29th with a series of town hall meetings to discuss recovery and renewal efforts for Gulf Coast residents of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. Groups participating in the August 28-29th meeting include the Center for Healthy Communities, Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation, Louisiana Justice Institute, Mississippi NAACP, Mississippi Economic Policy Center, numerous Gulf Coast coalitions and networks, with the support of national institutions including the Initiative for Regional and Community Transformation and Oxfam America.
The August 28th session will feature two two-hour town hall meetings with Gulf Coast residents discussing recovery and renewal efforts ranging from housing and economic development to education and the environment. One session will begin at 1:00 a.m. and a second session will start at 4:00 p.m. Expected to participate are national policymakers, including Representative Sheila Jackson-Lee (Texas), Representative William Jefferson (Louisiana), Representative Bennie Thompson (Mississippi) and Representative Maxine Waters (California).
