Stand Down 2008
In the Military Stand Down is based on the concept of “ at ease”.  It is a time when services members are brought back from combat to a place of safety for rest and rejuvenation.  For the VA, Stand down is an annual outreach event to Homeless Veterans, and is held at cities across the nation. The goal is to help them access health care, mental health & substance abuse treatment, & other services. Food is served and material items are provided. The VA Gulf Coast Veterans HCS will host three Homeless Stand down Events this year as follows:
· Mobile -Thursday, November 20, 2008 -Springhill Avenue Recreation Center, 1151 Springhill Ave, Mobile, AL
· Pensacola - Friday, November 21, 2008 -Loaves and Fishes, 257 E. Lee Street, Pensacola, FL
· Biloxi - Friday, December 5, 2008 -Recreation Hall & Grounds – VA Biloxi Campus
Each event needs community support and donations, such as backpacks, personal care supplies, sleeping bags, coats, gloves, new underwear and socks. If you have these items for the Biloxi event contact either Rodney Smith at 228-523-5508 or Mark Finch at 523—5003 to arrange drop off or pick up. We especially need funds to buy food for event, funds to buy vouchers for Veterans to take to Thrift store for clothing & shoes. If your organization would like to help by making a donation, please make check payable to: General Post Fund: Stand Down and mail them to:

Local health care facilities may also wish to help on the day of the event by sending mobile vans and teams to provide health screenings. Community agencies may wish to send teams to operate information tables to provide linkage to community resources. Volunteers are also needed for the day of the event to help with serving food, distributing clothing, clothing vouchers, hygiene kits, etc. If your organization would like to help in Biloxi on the day of the event, please sign up by contacting Mike Lally, LMSW, Primary Care Mental Health Social Worker, at 228-523-4699.
