Advocates Oppose Diversion of $600 Million in Housing Recovery Funds to Pay For Port Expansion

Citing major unmet housing needs and a failure to meet Fair Housing Act requirements, Steps Coalition and national fair housing advocates submit public comment opposing MDA Amendment 5, Port of Gulfport Restoration Program.

• 50,000 people or more remain trapped in formaldehyde contaminated FEMA trailers.

• Housing crisis remains severe, especially need for affordable rental housing.

• Unallocated funds could be directed towards homeowners with wind damage who have been left out of the recovery.

• 50% of the funding has not been spent to benefit low to moderate income residents as specified by CDBG requirements. 

• 80% of CDBG allocations have been effectively diverted away from low to moderate homeowners and renters who were disproportionately damaged by the storm.
