Biloxi Council to vote on GCCWA, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 1:30 p.m.

BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi City Council will vote tomorrow on the Gulf Coast Civic Works Act (HR 2269) resolution in support of bipartisan federal legislation to help rebuild and sustain Gulf Coast neighborhoods still rebounding from hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Local advocates are asking community members to come out and support this important resolution to bring thousands of job opportunities to the MS Gulf Coast.

BILOXI, MS – The Biloxi City Council will vote tomorrow on the Gulf Coast Civic Works Act (HR 2269) resolution in support of bipartisan federal legislation to help rebuild and sustain Gulf Coast neighborhoods still rebounding from hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Local advocates are asking community members to come out and support this important resolution to bring thousands of job opportunities to the MS Gulf Coast.
The Gulf Coast Civic Works Act (HR 2269)
• Builds vital public infrastructure and restores the environment
• Enhances energy efficiency & conservation to save energy costs
• Creates thousands of good wage & green jobs and job training opportunities for Gulf Coast residents
• Spurs equitable and sustainable community development
• Requires accountability and community oversight
• Serves as a national model for building on the strength of community action
The legislation has already been endorsed by over 250 community, environmental, faith-based and human rights organizations across the nation, including dozens across the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The City of New Orleans, Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes in Louisiana, and the Louisiana Republican Party previously passed similar resolutions supporting the legislation. Last week, leaders of the nation’s leading Catholic, Jewish, Muslim and Protestant organizations sent letters to President Obama and members of Congress urging support for the Act. The legislation is co-sponsored by 41 Members of Congress including Biloxi’s Rep. Gene Taylor (D, MS-4), Rep. Bennie Thompson (D, MS-2), Rep. Joseph Cao (LA-2), and Rep. Rodney Alexander (R, LA-5).
The council meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The City Council meeting will be held at the Biloxi Community Center, 591 Howard Ave. in Biloxi.
