Here are some recommendations you can send to the Governor’s Office and HUD about the Small Rental Rehab Program:
1. We want to make sure some units are made available to families who’s income is less that 80% of the Area Median Income (this is $38,500 for a family of 4). This means larger forgivable loans for property owners who are willing to rent their units at lower rates.
2. We want more funding allocated to the proposed Small Rental Rehab Program
3. We want local property owners to have first chance to access these funds
4. We want priority given to landlords who have only 1-4 units. Small property owners should have priority over larger developers since there are tax credits already available for larger developers.
5. We want this program to affect landlords who were subsisting on their rental income prior to the storm who’s livelihoods have been substantially endangered by the loss of their unit(s).
6. We want priority given to units in existing neighborhoods, so that our communities aren’t left with blighted properties, and our wetlands are not jeopardized by new construction in undeveloped areas
