Steps held the introductory meeting to its Campaign for a Safe and Healthy Port in the Gaston Point community on Thursday evening, March 11, 2010.
Steps recognizes that the $1.6 billion expansion of the Port of Gulfport will mean significant changes for Gulfport and the transformation of the community. Through the new port campaign, Steps will work toward positive solutions that will benefit the entire community.
The purpose of the campaign is to work with Gulfport communities that will be affected by the Port to better understand the state’s plans for the Port and the roads and railroads leading to it, as well as how residents might work with the project to achieve the goals of their own communities.
Objectives:
• To discuss the geographic foot print of the proposed “Port of the Future” and its impact on the communities’ Health, Environment, Housing, Economy, and on Historic and Cultural neighborhoods.
• To work with Gulfport residents to lay out their common goals for how this large scale development will interact with their community.
• To ensure residents impacted by the expansion of the Port are engaged in the Port expansion process.
Steps organizes its work under 5 Social Justice Pillars: Environmental and Economic Justice,
Affordable Housing, Preservation of Historic Neighborhoods and Human Rights.
Steps mission is to build a democratic movement to create a health, just and equitable Mississippi Gulf Coast by developing local leadership and supporting communities to advocate for their needs.
